Good News 360 Church Leaders Conference 2026: Chapter-by-Chapter Expositional Series
Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As we continue our chapter-by-chapter journey through the Book of Hebrews in preparation for the 41st Good News 360 Church Leaders Conference 2026, we come to Hebrews Chapter 5. This chapter draws our attention to one of the central themes of Hebrews: the priesthood of Jesus Christ. At the same time, it confronts every believer with a searching question: Are we growing toward spiritual maturity, or have we become spiritually dull?
Hebrews 5 reveals Christ as our perfect High Priest, appointed by God and fully qualified to represent His people. It also challenges us to move beyond spiritual infancy and become mature disciples who are firmly grounded in God's Word.
For pastors, missionaries, evangelists, Bible teachers, and Christian workers, this chapter is both an encouragement and a loving call to renewed spiritual growth.
The Qualifications of a High Priest
The writer begins by describing the role of the high priest under the Old Testament.
Every high priest was chosen from among men to represent people before God. He offered sacrifices for sins and dealt gently with those who were ignorant and wayward because he himself shared in human weakness (Hebrews 5:1-3).
Yet every earthly priest had limitations.
- He was a sinner.
- His ministry was temporary.
- He had to offer sacrifices for his own sins before offering sacrifices for others.
These priests pointed forward to Someone greater.
Christ Was Appointed by the Father
Unlike the priests of the Old Testament, Jesus did not appoint Himself to this sacred office. The Father appointed Him.
The writer quotes Psalm 2:7:
"Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee." (Hebrews 5:5)
He also quotes Psalm 110:4:
"Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec." (Hebrews 5:6)
Jesus is both the eternal Son and the eternal High Priest.
His priesthood does not descend from Aaron but from the order of Melchizedek — a priesthood that is eternal, royal, and superior. This theme will be developed more fully in the chapters that follow.
Our confidence, therefore, rests not in a temporary human priesthood but in the everlasting ministry of Jesus Christ.
The Obedience of the Son
One of the most profound statements in Hebrews is found in verses 7–9.
During His earthly ministry, Jesus offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the Father. Though He was the eternal Son, He learned obedience through the things which He suffered (Hebrews 5:8).
This does not mean that Christ moved from disobedience to obedience. He was always perfectly holy and without sin.
Rather, through His earthly life and suffering, He experienced the full reality of obedient human living. He perfectly fulfilled the Father's will in every circumstance, even unto death on the cross.
Because of His perfect obedience, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9).
What comfort this brings to believers. Our salvation rests upon the perfect obedience of Christ, not upon our imperfect efforts.
The Danger of Spiritual Immaturity
The chapter then takes an unexpected turn.
Just as the writer begins to explain the significance of Melchizedek, he pauses to address a serious problem among his readers.
"Ye are dull of hearing." (Hebrews 5:11)
These believers had been Christians long enough to be teaching others, yet they still needed someone to teach them the basic truths of the faith.
Instead of solid food, they still required milk (Hebrews 5:12).
This is one of the strongest challenges in the entire letter.
Spiritual maturity is not measured simply by how long we have attended church or served in ministry. It is measured by our growing knowledge of God's Word, our obedience to Christ, and our ability to discern truth from error.
- Knowledge without obedience produces pride.
- Activity without maturity produces weakness.
God desires servants who are continually growing in wisdom, holiness, and faithfulness.
Growing Through the Word of God
Hebrews 5 concludes by contrasting spiritual infancy with maturity.
"But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age..." (Hebrews 5:14)
Mature believers are those who have trained themselves through continual practice to distinguish good from evil.
Spiritual discernment develops as believers faithfully study Scripture, apply it to daily life, and submit themselves to the work of the Holy Spirit.
This is especially important for those entrusted with teaching God's people.
The Church needs leaders who handle the Scriptures carefully, preach them faithfully, and model spiritual maturity before the congregations they serve.
Healthy churches are built upon mature disciples who, in turn, make mature disciples.
Why Hebrews 5 Matters for Church Leaders Today
The challenges facing the Church today require more than enthusiasm. They require mature leaders who know God's Word and faithfully apply it.
In a world filled with false teaching, moral confusion, and constant distractions, believers must move beyond spiritual infancy.
Hebrews 5 reminds us that Christ is our perfect High Priest, whose finished work gives us complete confidence before God. It also reminds us that those who belong to Christ should continually grow in biblical understanding, spiritual discernment, and faithful obedience.
If we are to build the next generation in faith, we must not be content with shallow Christianity. We must raise up disciples who know the Scriptures, love the truth, and faithfully serve Christ throughout their lives.
